Here is an article on some great cornering drills from future BetterRide Coach, Brad Lowery! (Read more about Brad at the bottom)!
The first is one of my favorite cornering drills and Brad created an advanced version of it!
I learned the idea of Spirit Fingers from Danny Walker whose coaches/owns America Supercamps, a motorcycle skills school. Danny can corner like nobody’s business and if you want to learn to get sideways through a corner he is your man!
Spirit Fingers was my biggest takeaway from his course. I’ve applied it to my cornering practice and coaching curriculum. If you have the basics figured out this will set your cornering on fire!
Article:
While at a recent BetterRide course we were working on one of my favorite drills, the corner drill. Despite performing this in a flat parking lot with loads of traction at mild speeds this is still one of the hardest to get right.
Look through the corner! Keep all your weight in your pedals…HINGE! Elbows up and out, Counter pressure! Outside pedal dropped, stay ABOVE the bike. Brake before the turn, look, lean, and release!
If you’ve taken a BetterRide course you may be familiar with these cues. You’ll also know how difficult it is to perform all of them at once. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or an expert… it’s a lot to keep up with!
After a few laps through the cones, everyone was making great progress! However, it seemed that with each new success, something else suffered. This is a totally normal part of the learning process!
But how to fix it?
Enter SPIRIT FINGERS! This simple drill will force you to be balanced and get you in a perfect body position all while allowing your bike to corner with more traction.
But what is SPIRIT FINGERS anyway?
It’s simple! Just relax your hands on the bar and let your fingers float out in front of you instead of being wrapped around the bars. Keep your thumbs relaxed under the bars.

So how is it done?
Start with a basic corner drill (figure 8 or loop if doing it with friends), preferably on flat ground with plenty of traction. (Parking lots work great)
1. Approach the corner at a moderate speed and brake slightly, looking through the corner.
2. As soon as you have cut speed to a comfortable level, release the brakes and open your fingers up into the Spirit Fingers position.
3. Counter pressure smoothly and immediately after you have released the brakes to lean the bike into the corner.
4. Complete the corner looking to victory.
As soon as we used this simple trick, everything fell into place. Everyone was in balance with perfect body position. The best part was how quickly this worked! It was instant! All of a sudden people were FEELING what it meant to corner correctly for the first time. What a breakthrough!
For a more in-depth look at this drill and how to implement it in your riding, check out “Spirit Hands Part 2” next week!
About Brad:
Brad took my course in February and has been training hard and just won the US National Cat 1 Dual Slalom Championship! His attention to detail about technique made him a great student and will serve him well as a coach.
