Two decades ago, bike fitness trainer James Wilson and I got into a discussion on whether skills or fitness were more important for mountain biking.
In the end, we realized that even though he was MUCH fitter than me and also enjoyed the advantage of being about 15 years younger, I could beat him in a downhill race.
We determined skills were important and fitness was a close second. Just how close though?
This question found an answer for me this past weekend. After doing almost zero upper body workouts at the gym due to an injury, I had the opportunity to coach an awesome group of women at Purgatory Resort.
I was finally feeling about 80% recovered, so after coaching on Sunday I did four lift-serviced runs at Purg’s downhill park.
I was flying and it felt good. However, I soon noticed a decline in my precision, and my ability to maintain a steady head position became a struggle.
I was kind of all over the place, just sharp enough to not crash.
Ah, the dreaded “eyeball jiggle”! This was something I hadn’t experienced in years. On the fastest and roughest sections of the track, I found it increasingly challenging to focus my gaze far ahead and my vision was blurry. Oh, did I mention I was flying though?
Well, it felt like I was flying! Only I wasn’t, I was just forced to look closer in front of me which made me feel like I was going faster. According to Strava, I was quite a bit slower than a month ago on the same trails dispite the better trail conditions this time around.
I’m heading to the gym after I write this to get my upper body back in shape so I can ride smoother, faster, and safer!
Are you truly “bike fit”? Riding alone isn’t enough to reach your best.
In addition to doing skills drills, you need to do body drills too (working out and mobility work) if you want to ride at your best.
My recommendation is that you cross-train to improve your “bike fitness”.
The workout regimens designed by James Wilson, “Bike James,” along with the principles of Foundation Training, have really helped me stay strong, safe, and fast at 57! With a lot of Yoga thrown in too.
So, what’s your strategy beyond the bike to enhance your riding ? I highly recommend James Wilson’s programs, which have been an integral part of my routine for the past 20 years!
