Yay Spring! Are you ready to ride? I don’t mean excited to ride, I mean ready!
Tip 1: Have you been cross-training this winter? Are you Superhuman? Then don’t act like you are! You know what happens when you attempt to come back too fast.
You pull/strain muscles and/or get hurt. If you have lost a little fitness ease back into riding. If you take it easy you will be surprised how quickly your fitness returns.
Just a friendly reminder: I for one have tried to come back too fast and I’ve paid for it!
Tip 2: Work on your mobility. Work on your functional strength.
Riding makes your muscles tight, remember to stretch, foam roll, do yoga, work out, and/or whatever techniques you use to keep flexible and strong. If you are looking for a good workout that will help you ride longer and stronger this workout did that for me as well as fixing my back pain! Check them out here: More secrets to riding strong at 55.
Tip 3: Warm-up, your body, and mind.
Don’t go from the car/office/house straight to the trail. Design a pre-ride routine and stick to it. Here is my routine and how to design yours: MTB Pre-ride routine to help you ride your best.
Tip 4: Focus on the process/es, not the outcome.
When climbing focus on your breathing: in through the nose using your diaphragm.
When descending focus on looking where you want to be, not where you are (you are where you are, but you can change where you are going)
Tip 5: This is a great time to practice your skills!
Your “insulation” on any old bad habits is weakest after time off. Do some skills practice using the drills I have taught you to further insulate the correct skills before reinforcing your old habits!

Gene, Met you at Angel Fire maybe 15 yrs ago, and you knew all my Austin trails ! You were coaching Greg Minnar and a few juniors. Just stumbled across you here and stoked to see you are still at it. 72 and holding my own. We have a killer trail in Harlingen now. Later, Charlie
Hi Charlie, great to hear you are still out riding at 72! Keep it up!
Wow, I remember that weekend well. That was my first course working with Greg Minnaar.
I still love those Austin trails!
