My Secret to Riding Faster, Smoother, and Further Than Ever at 55.
I want to inspire you to take the steps that will make every part of your life better. Work, MTB, play, sleep, even sex can all be improved by relearning how to move your body.
At the beginning of 2021, I felt old! I had a lot of “little” aches and pains, I wasn’t sleeping well and I moved like an old man.
What happened to the fit guy I used to be? I didn’t stop playing, how did I get old?
I got lazy, that’s what happened. I paid my dues, I deserve to relax more. I have a fiancée and two kids that need a lot of time.
In other words, I was full of excuses!
Finally, I got this strange pain in my hip and I had had enough. I wanted to feel better, I wanted to ride longer than an hour and a half. I was sick of barely being able to climb 1,500 vertical feet in a day. So I took action.
Now I am crushing it! Every time I ride I am getting PRs and even getting some KOM’s without even trying, just riding, at 55! I climbed 2,500 feet yesterday half of it on a 12% grade.
I’m pedaling with grace and economy of movement that I have never felt. I’m breathing better than ever and climbing with ease. I don’t know if I have felt better in my life!
Rid your body of tension and ingrained poor movement patterns. How you sit matters. How you stand matters. How you get out of a chair matter.
Modern life isn’t doing our bodies any good. Sit down and drive to work, sit at a desk, sit down and drive home, sit, sit, sit. All that sitting isn’t good for us.
Modern chairs, plush coaches, sit-down toilets, soft car seats all wreak havoc on our bodies.
Reclaim your movements from childhood. Move with the grace you were born to have.
I couldn’t get up out of a chair without pushing off with my arms. I would ploop down into a chair or couch.
Now I get up using only my legs and sit with grace.
Can You Move Well Enough To Mountain Bike at Your Best?
Do you know how to move? Can you stand up out of a chair smoothly without pushing off with your hands? Can you sit down without “plopping down” the last few inches?
Heck, even the Greatest of All Time is focusing less on strength and more on movement.
Movement creates functional strength. Strength and grace that improves your riding and your life.
What action did I take that lead to these excellent results? I went through all 10 sessions of Rolfing with a master Rolfer and he taught me how to move.
My suggestion to you is to get Rolfed and relearn how to move. Learn how to sit, stand, walk and hold yourself with ease.
Don’t stop strength training, just back off a bit and spend the extra time teaching yourself how to move. Learn how to breathe too.
I always struggled with diaphragm breathing and thought it was my asthma and small lung capacity that was making it so difficult. Now I question if I have asthma and a small lung capacity.
My Rolfer told me that when I talk I hold my stomach so tight it is like I am doing a situp! He spent probably an hour loosening up my stomach muscles and I can breathe so much deeper now.
He also straightened out my deviated septum and opened up my nostrils. I feel like I have a turbo now!
Don’t wait until you can barely function as I did, start taking care of yourself and learning to move now. Do your research and find an experienced, proven Rolfer, go through all 10 sessions and do the movement exercises they teach you.
Here are a couple of great books on the subject:
Moving Beyond Posture – Judith Aston
Balancing Your Body: A Self-Help Approach to Rolfing Movement Paperback – Mary Bond
I’m still doing my Foundation training three days a week plus bench press or pushups and I spend 20-50 minutes a day stretching and foam rolling.
Make the time for yourself. You feel better, happier, and have more and better energy for your loved ones!

At age 60, and with a growing enthusiasm for mountain biking, an article like this one keeps me growing in confidence. Thanks!
You are welcome, Chuck! Keep the rubber side down and enjoy your riding!
